That’s a good question. How much do you really care?
I’ve had the privilege of working with a number of clients and entities over my many long years… 30 of them. And I’ve found myself in situations where I couldn’t shake the stress that kept building up.
I would tell my clients, “Hey, that’s a bad idea and here’s why.” They wouldn’t listen, and the endeavor would eventually fail or they would have me rework it back to the way I had suggested from the start.
This would frustrate me to no end. The stress kept building and building until one day I talked with my best friend, Robbie.
I said, “Robbie! I can’t take it anymore. I’m constantly stressed and my life is pulled every which way.” I was looking for agreement more than anything else.
But he said, “Dude! You’re caring too much. Look, they’re giving you lots of money to do it and it’s their ship. You do as your told when they don’t listen and that’s that.”
I stopped and thought about what he said. He was right. When I realized this all the stress melted away.
Sometimes in business, people don’t listen. But that shouldn’t tare you apart inside. Your happiness comes from your ship, not theirs. You are in charge of your life and you can do it the right way.
The Final Solution
In the words of the Internet…
After you did your best to make sure they know the right path to take, sit back, take a sip of a cold drink and recite the following:
“Not my circus, not my monkeys.”
PS… As a father I could also have said, “Let it go!” However, I’ve heard plenty of that song….
